Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

my bank took my money out of my checking without any notification when i called t inquire about the money they said that it was for payment toward a charged off account from 2006 i mentioned that i did not receive any thing in writing about this and that i was willing to make payment arrangements if i can get some information about the debt in the mail they then told me they were not obligated to make any arrangements with me or give me anything in writing and that they had the right to take the money as per the contact i signed when i opened my checking account i just want to know if this is legal and if they have the right to do something like this without notifying me
