Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

I have worked as a public school teacher in NYS for eight years. For seven of them, a well known union member has made broad and public comments about my sexuality and untrue allegations about me publicly regarding alcohol abuse; she has said this out loud so many times in the hallways and facility room that colleagues with whom I am friends told me about it and begged me to defend myself. When I told our principal, I was told to make up. When we informally met, the union member told her friends, who lied about me. I am now so afraid and defensive that I have gotten myself in trouble. It is a very hostile place in which to work. Admins. privately tell me that he/she is a trouble-maker and goes after other staff and them, but no one has protected me. What do I do?

Locksley Wade Law Office of Locksley O. Wade

First and most important thing: keep records (e.g. e-mail, letters, internal memoranda, journals, witness list). Second, short of seeing an employment law attorney I would suggest that you file a complaint with the school's EEO office and a separate complaint against your union with EEOC. This is complicated that is why you should see an attorney ASAP.
