Legal Question in Disability Law in New York

I recently became handicapped by a accident at home. When I returned to work. I was unable to do some of my current job description, so my employer gave me a pay cut and demoted me. Shouldn't a employer work with me to enable me to perform my normal job duties. ex. equipment or assistance with lifting, or sitting?
