Legal Question in Admiralty Law in New York

I found an inflatable raft(not a cheap one), this craft clearly did not belong where I found it(I literally saved it from destruction). I had procured information about the owner(I am in NY and owner is in Fla.). How do I approach this topic to the owner and should I claim salvage?
