Legal Question in Bankruptcy in New York

in debt and not enought money

i am receiving a social security check for a permanent disability and i owe money to many collection agencies for services i can't pay on. what can i do for i continue to get phone calls and nasty messages on my answer machine?

...and you will continue to get those phone calls until one of two things happens:

1. You begin to make monthly payments on the bills, which you have said you can't afford to do;

or

2. You file a petition for bankruptcy protection.

Do NOT attempt a bankruptcy petition on your own; YOU NEED LEGAL HELP for this. If your SSI is your only income, you may well qualify for the (free or reduced-fee) help of Legal Aid in your county; every county in NY has a Legal Aid Society office. Call them and see if you do qualify for their services (which are excellent, despite the low pricetag). Using Legal Aid's services is NOT accepting charity; those lawyers are paid from funds gotten from interest on lawyers' trust accounts throughout the state, which we are required to pay to the state specifically for this particular purpose.

If you're going to file for bankruptcy protection, you should probably do so sooner rather than later.
