To initiate a civil lawsuit in ny Supreme Cout the first steip is securing and index number and filing the summons?

Technically, it is better to prepare the complaint then obtain an index number and file the summons and complaint, because there is a rule that requires service to be made on the defendant within 120 days of purchase of the index number.
If you do it later, your complaint can be dismissed and you may be out the approximately $200 for a new index number.
