welfare/unemployment

i been told by unemployement that it may take up till 12 weeks for my hearing. can i collect welfare during this waiting period. i live in NJ but my umemployment is out of NY

Unemployment compensation and welfare are two different programs. You should contact the welfare authorities in your county to see if you qualify, making sure you tell them that you have filed a claim for unemployment compensation but will not begin to receive benefits for several weeks.
