witness at trial

if I am subpoenad to show up in court on january 23 I go to court and its been cancelled for the following day is it ok for me not to go can i get in trouble

Yes; but there are several types of subpoenas. Document subpoenas are called "duces tecum" and then there are subpoenas to compel an appearance for deposition. The most common is for trial testimony, and contempt is a real punishment, from a fine to imprisonment.
