Legal Question in Technology Law in New York

An adult entered an adult website and began a chat with another individual. They talked and then one gave the other a cell phone number so they spoke over the phone. Later, the adult who lives in New York sent an adult image to the other person who claimed to be an adult in Virginia. However, during that exchange someone came on and typed the person was only 14 and they were calling the police. The New York person immediately shut down the chat and contacted the website to log a complaint and remove his profile. Since he had no idea he was speaking to a minor, nor had any intention of doing so, what should he do?
