Legal Question in Construction Law in New York

Commercial Business license

I am interested in corporating an LLC for commercial and residential construction?

Do I need to obtain a license to do commercial building? I do not think so?

Do I need to obtain a license to do residential building?

I think it is the Home improvement contractor's license?

Am I required to have Builder's insurance in NY?

Re: Commercial Business license

There is no state-wide general contractor licensing in New York. Individual towns or counties may have particular requirements. Trades (electrical, plumbing) are licensed. Insurance requirements are established on a municipal basis and are tied to permitting. Manny municipailties will not issue permits for jobs without proof of insurance, but it's not needed to form a corporation or LLC.
