Legal Question in Consumer Law in New York

I bought a product approx ten years ago with a lifetime guarentee against defects. The product has developed a serious defect and the maker wants a copy of my original purchase info or they refuse to fix the product. I bought it 10 years ago and have no idea where the original paper work is. The maker currently does repair in Wisconson and I live in NY. Is their requirement legit ??

The scope you bought must have a serial number or product number on the face or body of the scope. The serial no. provides info. on the year(s) of manufacture. Life time warranty should be honored irrespective of the availability of a receipt. However, terms of the warranty control your rights. The warranty may only be extended to the original purchaser in which case the need for the receipt. I would contact the company and tell them not to create a situation where you would have to contact the better business bureau; the consumer protection agency and numerous complaints on the web describing your experience with this company that ultimately will be more costly to them in public relations and loss of consumers than making good on their product. As a sign of good faith, I would also offer them a 33% contribution toward the mailing of a new one to you upon furnishing the old one. I would get the agreement in writing before providing the old scope and your contribution.
