Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

my father passed away 2 years ago. there was no estate. yesterday I was contacted by a collection agency (posing as a process server) trying to reach my father. I did not speak to them, my husband did. they would not give him any info but said I must call them back. am I responsible for any debt my father may have left after his death and what is my obligation to contact this collection agency?
