Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

hello, iam being sued for the unpaid ballance on my credit card.I am a single mother working part time on cash. today i got served with court notice.I cannot pay the ballance, i just cant afford it, and i cant afford a lawyer but it says in notice that they can take my property too. I just dont know what to do.Can u kindly give any advice in this matter? Thank you very much. Sincerely Agnes.

The agencies often write on their own notices they will sue (and they have that right) but don't. Also, there is a statute of limitations ("SOL") many credit collection agencies bypass, hoping uninformed people will go ahead, get scared and pay. Then, the people are screwed because even an extra $20 they paid 7 years and a month later to calm the agency re-opens the SOL.
