Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

I loaned my brother-in-law $18,000. We drew up a paper detailing the loan and how much he owed me monthly and had it notorized. My question is: if he were to die and his wife collects his life insurance, is she responsible for this debt if her signature is not included on our document?

Technically, the estate would be responsible for the debt. You would have to sue the estate.
