Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

My son was 19 when he broke his leg and needed surgery. He was uninsured. I took him to the hospital and because of that the bills are in my name. He never seeked help through medicaid and since he was over 18, I couldn't do that for him. I've been paying minimal every month to all involved but I am still looking at over $20,000 to go. How can I not be responsible for this? Can I get his father to pay half?
