Statute of limitations for a small claims case

I would like to know how old a cliam for an unpaid debt can be and still be eligable for small claims court

Time limitations apply to the type of claim, not the court. For instance, a contract action must be started within 6 years of the breach (unless the contract provides for a shorter period of time). Thus, the answer to your question depends on what the claim is, not on which court you want to go to.
