Wage Garnishment

Can a garnishment be stopped once it is put into action? If so how can it be stopped?

yes; usually halting a garnishment depends upon overturning the judgment. In your instance, there may have been a default judgment and it is not difficult to vacate a default judgment against you should the default have occurred within five years.
