can a judge come off the bench to help the d.a in a murder trial when the jury is deadlocked and they ask for a read back.

A judge's role is limited to that of an impartial "trier or finder of law" in a criminal trial where there is a jury. As such, the judge must only answer or clarify any questions that a particular juror or the jury as a whole has regarding evidence presented during trial, or questions concerning the applicable law during trial.
