Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

I live in a rural area, and just outside my town I found an abandoned building. It appears to have last been uninhabited about fifteen years ago, there is a lot of evidence of recreational drug use, and appears to be a hangout for "druggies" and homeless transients our town sees quite often. This building is in extremely bad shape (the upper floors have fallen through in places) and is boarded up except for a back door where the plywood has been removed to make access easy. My friend, whom has a great lack of faith in our police force, has decided that he wants to burn it to the ground. There are no surrounding buildings within a hundred yards. How much trouble could he get in for this?

That is known as arson, a felony. Don't do it.

Complain to your town/village officials and ask for this nuisance to be condemned and razed.
