Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

I live in the state of Michigan. I am 19 years old and this is my first offense. It took place while I was on vacation in new York state and that's where I got arrested. I was charged with petty larceny. A misdemeanor. I have court on September 15th. I have no money for a lawyer nor do I have money to keep traveling fro Michigan to new York for another court date. How should I proceed with this? What can I do? And what is the most likely punishment I will receive for a first time offense? And if I get community service can I get it carried over to Michigan state where I live? Or if I go to jail does it have to be in new York state? I have never been through the legal system before and I really need help. I can not afford a lawyer or money or a place to stay in new York. What can i do?

Contact the Legal Aid Society or Public Defender in the city where the court is located. Sometimes a court will take a plea in absentia, with a small fine.
