My money was lost in the dorm of a high school, who is responsible for it?

If you want to ask again, please include the following info: the state the high school is located in (we're assuming New York, but you know what happens when you assume...), where your money was, how you think it was lost, whether the money was in a secured location when it was lost, and whether anyone else had custody of and control over the money with your permission when it was lost.
