Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York
My relative was charged with forcible touching in NYS, a Class A Misdemeanor in NYS. It has a maximum 3 years probation for a class A Misdemeanor. My relative got 6 years probation when the maximum is 3 years. The plea deal was also agreed and signed with it being 3 years probation. How could they change it to 6 years?

Certain sexual offenses in New York State are punishable by double the ordinary probation time. So instead of the maximum 3 years applicable to most Class A misdemeanors, your relative was sentenced to 6.
