If this is your first criminal offense, with a good lawyer, you should not have much to worry about. He would most likely plea to a small violation and pay a fine or perhaps receive an ACD, Adjournment contemplating dismissal and as long as you don't commit another offense in six months, it pretty much disappears..We do handle many cases like this and are very experienced with the court you would be appearing at. Plead 'not guilty'. First, that will PREVENT he matter from having any impact on your status or career. In the United States, nothing is reported until there is a determination of 'guilty or not guilty'. So this will get you some time to consider your options.

Re: Shop Lifting

It sounds like you were given a Desk Appearance Ticket (DAT). You are facing an 'A' misdemenor; pleading guilty to this would give you a criminal record. However, usually a good lawuer can get the charge dropped to disorderly conduct, a violation and not a crime. In addition, you may be able to get an ACD. This means the case would be adjourned for 6 months and then get dismissed if you have no more arrests.

I do criminal defense and have had good results with these type cases. I recently got a dental student an ACD even thought the DA's Office had a policy of not giving them out in this type of case. If you would like to discuss your case, please feel free to call me in my office at 212-622-7180. I will not be in until tomorrow due to the Jewish holiday.
