Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

My son just turned 19 (problem happened when he was 18). Accussed of stealing soda, candy, cigarettes from store he worked at in NY (currently suspended and they claim to have camera footage of incidents. He has no prior incidents can he be given youthful offender status? I have talked to the detective and he says I am getting stressed for no reason that they will have a representative for my son at the court house and that my son has been very helpful and regrets the dumb decision according to what the detective told me. I have talked to a handful of lawyers - one told me he can go through mediation and would not have to attend court. While another told me he has to go to court and he would very likely have the case dismissed. I have a full time job but due to some bad timing my savings are drained and can only come up with part of the money for a lawyer now if needed and the rest by mid-January. I do not want my son to have this hanging over his head for the rest of his life. I have no idea who is telling me the truth. Both lawyers have different fee levels and the detctive basically told me I from his experiences in this matter I would be wasting my money? Do I let him go to the court date December 28th (he knows he has to pay the money back but has to get a job now) see what happens and then if needed get a laywer who could help with his record (I will have the money to help him January 18th). Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think taking legal advice from the prosecution team would be a wise strategy. Your son is charged with a misdemeanor and could face lifelong ramifications if the situation is not resolved competently.

Trusting the public defender to handle the case is also unwise because they probably won't spend more than two minutes reviewing the file before seeing the judge.
