Legal Question in Discrimination Law in New York

i work in a new york county jail. we bid for shifts by senority. i was told i can only bid certain shifts because i am a female officer. they are not allowing me to bid by senority.

If you believe that you are qualified for the position then make a formal application (in writing) and if you are denied solely because you are a woman, you may have a case of sex discrimination. The only way out of this for the employer is for them to articulate a sound and lawful reason for denying you the position.
