audio book

what legal hurdles would if face if I recorded myself reading a published book and then I sold the recording? an ''audio book'' recorded and distributed by somone else of the same book may already be available.

If you are not the author you must obtain the right to record and publish the book (make a derivative work and distribute under the copyright law) from the author.

If this is a best seller it will be harder than if it is your friends' memoir.

Yes but they have permission to sell their audio book and you don't, yet. I can assist you in getting permission; it may be relatively easy.
