Legal Question in Family Law in New York

The advise is free? I do have a question about family law...My husband has just left me today and I want to know what my first steps are. We were married 26 years and have a 23 year old (living home) and a mortgage .... and several other bills that he has left me with. A little afraid to spend any $ I don't have but I don't know where to turn first.

Gather all financial documents. This includes a copy of all tax returns (including W-2 and/or 1099 statements), all income, expense, asset and liability statements. If the husband owns a business, try to obtain as much information as possible concerning the income and expense of the business. Only after you gather all financial documents should you speak to a lawyer. Financial information will help the lawyer make suggestions on how to proceed.

If you are in need of spousal support, go to Family court and complete a petition for same.

Family court can be commenced without an attorney.
