How do you obtain a legal name change in NYS? How long does it take?

The answer depends on why the name is being changed and whether it is a minor. I will assume the question relates to an adult. Anybody may assume another name by consistently using the name and as long as the purpose is not to defraud.
You may also file a petition for name change w/ court. Each County/Court has their own rules but basically once the court approves it(order)you need to give notice by publishing it in the newspaper, etc. From Order to completion takes about 40-60 days. Rules for minors are different.
