Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Can a court appoint a lawyer in Divorce/Custody

I have what I consider a good case for custody in NY. However, I am constantly being pushed to concede. I have had paid for attorney but he basically has done nothing. I am out of money but I want to pursue custody. My wife makes twice as much as I do. What are my possibilities. I met with another attorney and she said the court can appoint a lawyer. If this is true...what are the guidelines??

The court can appoint an atty to act as a law guardian for the child/children ( not for you ).This is an independent atty who represents the child. Depending on income, the Judge will determine who pays what amount for this atty. A law guardian gets a retainer against an hourly fee. As I am sure you have been told, the standard is ...what is the best interest of the child. Good Luck.
