Legal Question in Family Law in New York

my best friend wants to give me custody of her baby girl. the father is currently in jail and she has a oder of protection against him. She feels she is unfit and wants to give me her child because we both feel the child would be in better care.neither of us know how to go about this with out geting a lawers and going to court. we live in buffalo ny; what would be the best way to go about transfering the custody legally without the adoption process?

Not happening. Go to the surrogate's court in your county and find the adoption office, and ask the clerk.
