Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Friend with parent trouble

A friend of mine says she hates her mom. She lives with her dad because they are divorced. She says shes been to court about problems before about abuse but it was long ago and did not come out in her favor. She says she thinks of running away or hurting herself when she is over there. (which is weekends to my knowledge)I want to know if theres anything she can do to stay away from her mom, like a restraining order or something of the sort.

Re: Friend with parent trouble

If your friend is in imminent danger, she should go to the police; if she has been hurt, she should seek medical assistance - immediately.

I need to know the precise nature of your friend's difficulaties to determine her options. The are various remedies available under the Family Court Act, for example, which may or may not be appropriate to the circumstances. Advise your friend to speak with an attorney as soon as possible. I can be reached at 212-367-9167. I do not charge a fee for the initial consultation.
