Paternity

My friend has doubts about the paternity of his son.He has visitations with him regularly.Is he legally able to take the child to get this checked without the mothers knowledge or does he need an order from a judge do do this?What is the process?

He would need to go to court to request a "filiation" proceeding, where a DNA test may be ordered. However, if he has been visiting with the child and supporting him for some time, and the child is old enough to know him as his father, he might be prevented from denying.
