I am representing myself in family court in new york state. do i need to subpoena my ex wife to testify

It all depends. You are missing a lot of information.

I assume she has been summoned by the court to make her appearance if she is a party.

If she is not a party to the action, and you need her in court to testify on your behalf, you should subpoena her.
