Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Sex Abuse victime testifying in open court?

My niece was sexually assaulted - she is 8. Does she have to testify in open court in front of her abuser? Is there a way she can just tell the judge what happened in private? Or at least be hidden from her abuser when testifying? Her law guardian says she has to testify, but I would like to minimize the trauma to her.

You would ask the Judge that the child's testimony be held "in camera".
