Legal Question in Family Law in New York

How does being on Social Services affect custody?

I have sole custody of my son. The father violated the court order, so I filed a violation on him. He is now counter-suing me for custody (original order was reached by mutual stipulation). I have recently went on social services. How would this affect my retaining sole custody of my child?

You have my sympathies for this difficult situation.

It should have no impact. However, it does indicate that you may qualify for a free lawyer with legal services or legal aid. Look into it! (*its better than asking questions on the internet!)
