Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My son just turned 18 years old. His dad and I have been devoiced for 16yrs. We have joint legal custody however, I also have physical custody. His dad has liberal visitation that has worked well for everyone all these years. My son has ADHA and LD, has attended special ed. classes and also has behavior problems at school and at home. Lately, his behavior has become unmanable for me and I have "sent" him to stay with his dad since, his dad states that he doesn't have a problem with. His dad dosen't mind the regular visitation but states that I'm still responsible for my son and that I can't send him there to "live". Since my son is 18, am I still legally responsible for him...can my ex-husband take me to court and "make me" take my son back in lieu of his bad behavior? What are my options.
