Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My son's mother has withheld the whereabouts of my son for months and in the past few recent months moved out of state with my son without my knowledge. Meanwhile I submitted paperwork for paternity and custody of my son to the local courts. In return I received in the mail a copy of my petition as well as paperwork requesting my financial information, including W2's and paystubs be sent to the Department of Social Services in a matter of child support proceedings. Why is it being requested for me to submit my financial information to the Department of Social Services?

Part of it is them having responsibility for child support services and they can, in fact, suspend driver's licenses and even place people in jail. I would do as they ask to be able to show the judge you are doing what you can even though the child's mother appears not to be (you need legal help to straighten this all out).
