Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My step son is 19 & lives with his mother. He quit high school at 17 & never went for his GED. He only works part time & has no plans, ambition or motivation to return to school or work full time. Is it possible to petition the court for the child support to stop before 21? Thanks.

You may only petition the Court if the child is emancipated. Based on your question, since the child still is with the mother and is not working, he is not deemed emancipated. Therefore, support obligations would continue until the child is 21 years.
