Legal Question in Medical Leave in New York

surgery for family member

i'm not sure what the legal standpoint of what the family medical act covers. my situation is that my wife required an immediate surgery for a pain in her stomach that after close evaluation turned out to be a hernia, consequently once i was told the date of the surgery, i asked my job for time off by sending them an email with all this information, i even used my 2 comp days that I still had left since this was a family emergency.

however my wife needed more time to recover from the surgery so i sent an email and spoke with my manager and supervisor over the phone about taking more time to take care of my wife, they said it was approved so i took 2 extra days.

i came back to work but now my job is issuing me a negative performance warning due to the fact that i asked for two days off to care for my wife after she had surgery since she was unable to care for herself as well, even after they told me it was approved, i think what they are doing is totally unfair. it is legal for them to threaten me with a negative performance warning and a written reason why i took off?, can i do something about it to fight the negative performance warning?, is it legal what they are doing?, i need some guidance on this issue, thank you very mu
