Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

Liability for property damage at a wedding party

I was recently a guest at a wedding party where my car was vandalized during the party by either the groom, one of his friends or one of the vendors hired by the groom (I don't have direct proof of who is responsible).

Damage to the vehicle is estimated at approximately $1500. Who is liable for property damage at a wedding party where no one claims responsibility?

Thanks.

Re: Liability for property damage at a wedding party

The question is where the car was parked.

If at a parking lot, then the owner of the parking lot is liable if the vandal was not a member of the wedding.

If vandalized by a member of the wedding, that person is liable and that is a 'proof problem'.

Unless you have proof of the cause of the damage, whether direct or circumstantial, you will not be able to hold anyone liable. Perhaps the catering hall if you can prove security was unreasonably inadequate. Do you have property coverage for your car? Perhaps you can claim from your insurer.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line, or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.
