Legal Question in Health Care Law in New York

Hospital attempting to collect money through civil court system

I have had surgery to remove my appendix in 2002. I was in the hospital for a total of 2 days, and they billed me $9,500.00. I am a bike messenger and I don't have that kind of money nor health insurance. I have recieved a letter from the civil court in my county stating the atty. has filed an action to collect. What are my options as of now to possibly get this amount down to one that i could handle. I have heard everything from having the hospital itemize the bill so I can refute their claim amount, to getting on public assistance to have the amount lessened to the emergency room visit fee. Anything helpful that can be done would be greatly appreciated.

First you must answer the complaint or else a default judgment will be issued against you. Go down to the Court--they should have a form answer to file and send to the plaintiff's attorney.

Then negotiate after that.

Good Luck
