Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

employement of international LLM students in USA

Greetings

Dear sir/madam

I am a law graduate from India. I aspire to do my masters in law in USA.As you know, compared to India the fees of masters in law for International students is very high. To make up for the high fees, I would idealy like to be employed for some time in USA. I seek your advice in this matter, as I am informed that it is very difficult to stay on after finshing the course.

I have been informed that as a international student from India, after completion of my LLM in USA I would be allowed to give the BAR exams only in Ney York and California. In that case do I also need a LLM form a university in New York and California, or some other university like Yale would do.

To provide you with a little more background on me, I

should mention that I have passed my bachelors degree

in law from Pune, India this year and by next year I

would have had one year experience. I am currently

working in corporate commercial matters in a legal

firm in Mumbai. My aggregate in the Bachelors degree

is between 57 - 58 % and I have a few publications to

my credit.

Re: employement of international LLM students in USA

I think you should repost this question for U.S

immigration law category. It has come in the India

category and might not have gone to American Lawyers.

There are a large number of websites that give the

information that you have asked for. You need to

establish your financial ability to pay for the

course and then you need to apply for the bar licensing

examination. I'm not aware of licensing restrictions

in particular states and you should check up the

individual state bar associations for this.

A student visa does not entitle you to stay

after the studies and work there. But if you are

hired while studying or before your visa expires

I think a visa for a work permit can be

obtained.

Given that you are an Advocate desiring to study Law in U.S,

I suggest that you search the internet to find

the answers yourself. It is easy but it takes

time. As a clue look for the answers from the most

authoritative sources.

Best,

N. Ramaswami
