Legal Question in Intellectual Property in New York

Tape recording unhinged professor

In New York, is it permissible to tape record a class without the professor's permission if the purpose of the recording is to document inappropriate behavior, and not violate intellectual property laws?

New York is a so-called one party state, meaning that it is legal to record a conversation with the consent of one party. However, that's not the end of the inquiry here. Your college may have restrictions on this type of activity to which you have agreed.

However, if the behavior is truly inappropriate, it's unlikely that there would be a serious complaint as to the recording.

In NY you can do this but your institution probably does have guidelines on this topic. You should file a complaint with the school before you take things into your own hands.
