Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Slander, What Can I Do?

I was at my ex employer for over a year as a mid-manager. I never had any problems with HR or anyone else in the company. Last September two departments merged. The manager from that dept has a history of problems with other employees throughout the company but she remains untouched. Because I was a manager as well, we disagreed on many issues regarding the dept. but it stayed on a professional level. She has an assistant that has made it clear to other employees wants my job. She has lied regarding things I have said-which I never did. This continued until I got fired on 3/16. The reason given was I did not comply with my job description,it's not a ''right fit'' and they told me I had been on probation since Jan-I never knew that.I tried to explain but was abruptly silened by the HR manager.I never signed anything that stated I was on probation.I received a phone call from someone who still works there and informed me that that manager, is starting a rumor that I stole from the company-all this after I was terminated. I never stole anything, worked extremely hard, and would only have 1 day off a week.I know that ever since the depts merged, her assistant wanted my job and they wanted to get rid of me. What can I do? Please help.

Re: Slander, What Can I Do?

Unless you learn, and can prove that the manager has written or stated falsely to someone in a factual manner that you stole something, nothing.

Opinion is not slander.

Much would depend on whether you had an employment contract and its terms as to other remedies.
