Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Haunted house part 2

I rented a family home and its a mess, everything is breaking there is no hot water/heat, electrical problems and the list goes on. When I moved in there was a balance of 300 bucks left to pay in which I gave them a check. When I saw nothing was done in the house not even painting as agreed I put a stop payment on the check. The rent is always paid in cash or money order but unlucky me this month my check bounced due to a problem I had with my bank account. I called to tell them, cleared it up and paid my money order but it took a few days which made me late by 5 days. They threatned evcition, the wife called me at work over twenty times and he stood outside my house one night over an hour which freaked my babysitter out. They are very fast to collect but havent made one repair since i moved in.

I have asked them to let me out of my lease, the house is horrible and they freak me out. I told them I wouldnt pay anymore until he gave me heat/hot water etc. I guess he doesnt wanna fix, b/c he agreed to let me out of the lease.

should i get something in writing? also since he agreed without talking to his wife she called saying she could evict me based on the bounced check? is this true, i just want out.

Definately get it in writing.

You can always have the option to complain to the local authorites, even in Carle Place they don't take kindly to no heat/hot water complaints.
