Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Landlord Changing information

I just received a letter that was hand delivered to my mailbox that beginning December 1st that rent checks were to be made out to my landlord's mother. Also it states that rent must be delivered to a woman that lives 2 houses away from us. If we have any questions or concerns, we're to contact the landlord's boyfriend. In our lease, none of these names are listed. We're very concerned that we may end up getting the short end of the stick and be forced out of here. What should we do? Should we ask for a new lease even though our's is not up til May 2009?

Re: Landlord Changing information

It seems that the lease was assigned to another individual.

Assuming that the letter is signed by the prior landlord, you should make payment in accordance to its instructions. Furthermore, to ease any concern rent payment should be made by check or you should obtain a receipt upon payment.

Mike.
