Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

no lease

i was renting a STORE FROM A GUY who sold the building.i meet the new landlord my old lease was honored(never collected any rent). then a few months later a new guy comes

around saying he's the new landlord but never said anything about a lease, now months later asks for back rent,but never was there given a lease or anything to show that he is really the landlord.what can i do?

This is a difficult situation.

(1) You must make sure the new man is the owner. This can be done at the county registry office.

(2) If the new man is the owner, then you do owe the back rent. BUT you can negotiate with him for a smaller amount of money.

A lawyer can be very helpful in negotiating. This is what lawyers do.
