Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Rent Increase

I am a month-to-month tenant with no lease in a privately owned brownstone paying $600/month. (I have been living there since 1977.) The landlord recently gave notice that she wanted to raise the rent to $1,000, have me sign a lease and I had 3 months to decide if I wanted to pay that amount or give up the apartment. What can I do?

Re: Rent Increase

If it's a private residence, you have 3 months to decide what you want to do. $600 is way below market value and 3 months is ample time under the law.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line, or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.
