Legal Question in Legal Malpractice in New York

May an attorney contact a layman

I had a dispute with my company regarding employment severance. I received an email from their lawyer asking me to sign a contract that I thought wasn't fair. Is this legal? Can a lawyer contact me directly although I wasn't represented by an attorney?
