Legal Question in Personal Injury in New York

my auto insurance was cancelled..i didnt not know that had happened..three days after the insurance cancelled i was in an auto accident...i was not at fault ..but i did not have auto ins coverage at the time of the accident . i recently spoke to an attorney..and he informed me that auto insurances have a grace period in in which even though your auto insurance has lapsed you are still covered by that insurance company? does this grace period vary from state to state ? iam in Long Island New York ...

There is a grace period to pay once you receive a "Notice of cancellation/termination" but once that deadline passes and the insurance is cancelled...it is cancelled.

You have a short grace period after you receive your notice of termination. But after the grace period your insurance is cancelled.
